Wearing Hearing Aids in Warmer Weather

We live in a warm country but it gets even warmer in the Summer months and we need to know how to care for our hearing aids in the more extreme heat…

Have you ever wondered if you should be doing anything differently when wearing hearing aids in warmer weather? The warmer months can be tricky for your hearing aids as they go from hot, sunny conditions outdoors to potentially much colder indoor conditions. This is particularly true if you are entering an air conditioned place. Simply follow our top tips and enjoy the warm weather safely…

Water Damage

Wearing hearing aids could be compared to wearing a mini computer in your ear and we all know that computers don’t deal well with water. The same rule applies with your hearing aids. If you are heading away for a break and know that you will be taking a dip in a hot tub, pool or even the

sea, always remove your hearing aids and store them safely in a hearing aid case.

Unfortunately, humidity can often have the same effect as water on hearing aids. So if you’re heading to a humid place, you should be careful to take time to fully dry your aids and give them a rest from the moisture. You can do this by wiping them with a dry, dust-free cloth and any excess dust / moisture will be removed. If you do this each evening before bed, you can leave the battery door open (unless you have rechargeable aids) overnight. This will give any moisture a chance to dry out. Obviously, perspiration is the same as moisture. If you’re working up a sweat, be sure to clean and dry your aids as discussed. There are various dehumidifying cases you can purchase, electric and non-electric, which will fully dry out your hearing aids.

No Sand

If you’re lucky enough to be taking a trip to the beach, you need to ensure that you do not get any sand into your aids. We would advise that you wash your hands thoroughly after touching sand before handling your aids. If they get sand inside, it can clog up your aids in much the same way that earwax can.

Keep Out of the Sun

If it is a hot day, you will need to be mindful of leaving hearing aids out in the sun. When you take your hearing aids out, be sure to pop them safely into your case. You should not leave them on a window sill, on display in your car or on a table in the sunlight. They need to be in a cool, dry place and not in the direct sunlight.
