Earwax Removal

Have you seen Wax Off, our YouTube earwax removal video series?

As a hearing healthcare company, we regularly offer earwax removal. We offer endoscopic and microsuction wax removal most often but can also offer irrigation if necessary.

Why do people need earwax removal?

Before we get into the reasons as to why we created a fantastic YouTube series for you all to enjoy, we thought we should explain why it is that some people need their excess earwax removing. Earwax is made up of cerumen (a substance secreted from glands in the outer ear canal), dead skin cells and hair. The waxy texture prevents the skin in your ear from drying out and cracking. Earwax is a mysterious substance with some studies showing it can fight infection and others showing the exact opposite. Whatever the correct conclusion, we do know for sure that it protects the ear canal from things like bacteria and foreign bodies.

Usually earwax works its way out of the ear on its own, however, if there is an excessive amount, it can cause the ear canal to become blocked. This can lead to hearing loss, a feeling of fullness or even tinnitus. There are lots of reasons why people produce excess earwax but here are a few of the most common:

  • You have narrow or damaged ear canals
  • You have a lot of hair in your ear canal
  • You suffer from a skin condition which affects your scalp or around your ear
  • Your ear canal is inflamed

How do we remove your earwax?

The quickest and safest methods of earwax removal are microsuction and endoscopic earwax removal. We offer both of these services. Microsuction wax removal is where a small, low pressure probe is put into your ear and it gently sucks the wax out.

Endoscopic wax removal is very similar to microsuction. An endoscope is an instrument that is used to look inside the body. It will be attached to a video monitor for easy viewing – this could be a smartphone, tablet or similar. A direct view into the ear is also possible through the eyepiece of the endoscope. Difficult to remove wax can be tackled more easily than ever before due to the exceptional precision the endoscope offers. This type of earwax removal may reduce the risk of needing any follow up appointments as we are able to have a much wider view of the ear canal and eardrum.

These methods are considered the safest. Others, such as syringing, use high pressure which can lead to complications.

How did Wax Off begin?

Since we have offered endoscopic earwax removal, this has given us an opportunity to video our procedures. We thought people might be interested to see the process of earwax removal from inside the ear. For this reason, we created a YouTube video series where our senior Audiologist, Robina, talks through the procedure and explains everything that is happening as you see it on screen. We try to pick the most interesting of procedures for our viewers so look out for those videos where we find something interesting!

For some procedures, we even create the perfect sensory ASMR version of the video. In these videos, you can see the procedure but only hear the noise of the actual suction.

If these videos are something you would be interested in watching, if you subscribe to our channel, you will get a notification each time we post a brand new one. There are currently over 60 available for you to check out! Let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to know.
