Do Hearing Aids Work Properly in Hot and Humid Weather?

Hot and humid weather can present challenges for hearing aid users, but with the right care, your devices can continue to perform at their best. As temperatures rise and heatwaves become more common, it’s important to protect your hearing aids from moisture, heat, and sun exposure.

Follow our simple tips below to keep your hearing aids working reliably throughout the summer months and during holidays in warmer climates.

Protect Your Hearing Aids from Moisture Damage

Hot, humid conditions often lead to increased perspiration and moisture inside the ear canal. Excess moisture can affect the delicate electronic components inside your hearing aids, potentially reducing their performance or causing temporary faults.

To help prevent moisture damage:

  • Wipe your hearing aids with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth at the end of each day to remove moisture, sweat, and debris.
  • If you wear battery-powered hearing aids, leave the battery compartment open overnight after removing the batteries. This allows any trapped moisture to evaporate.
  • Consider using a hearing aid dehumidifier or drying box. Both electric and non-electric options are available and can help extend the life of your hearing aids by removing excess moisture.

If you’re enjoying a day at the beach or relaxing by the pool, always remove your hearing aids before swimming or showering unless your specific model is designed to be fully waterproof. Store them safely in their protective case while you’re in the water.

Avoid Heat and Sun Damage

High temperatures and direct sunlight can also affect the performance and lifespan of your hearing aids.

Whenever you remove your hearing aids:

  • Store them in their protective case.
  • Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Never leave them on a windowsill, in a parked car, or on an outdoor table in full sun, as excessive heat can damage sensitive electronic components and batteries.

Store your hearing aids in their case when not in use.

Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent unnecessary repairs and keep your hearing aids performing at their best.

Regular Hearing Aid Servicing Keeps Them Performing Their Best

Routine hearing aid maintenance is just as important as daily care. We recommend attending a hearing aid check-up every six months to ensure your devices are clean, functioning correctly, and programmed to match your current hearing needs.

It’s important to keep up with your 6 monthly hearing check ups.

When you purchase your hearing aids from us, you’ll receive either two years of aftercare appointments included in the price. During these appointments, we’ll:

  • Professionally clean your hearing aids.
  • Check they are working correctly.
  • Replace any worn components if required.
  • Reprogram your hearing aids to reflect any changes in your hearing.

Regular servicing helps maximise the lifespan of your hearing aids while ensuring you continue to enjoy the best possible hearing experience.
