How to care for your hearing aids in hot weather

Warmer climates can be tricky for your hearing aids as they go from hot, sunny conditions outdoors to potentially much colder indoor conditions. This is particularly true if you are entering an air conditioned place. Simply follow our top tips to enjoy warm weather safely…

Moisture damage

Wearing hearing aids in hot weather can sometimes be uncomfortable due to the humidity. If the weather is particularly hot and humid, you may have moisture in your ear. If this does occur, you will need to ensure you give your hearing aids time to dry out. After a day in a humid place, you should wipe them with a dry, dust-free cloth. This will ensure any excess dust / moisture is removed. Each evening before bed, if you have battery powered hearing aids, you can leave the battery door open overnight. This will give any moisture a chance to dry out. There are various dehumidifying cases you can purchase, electric and non-electric, which will fully dry out your hearing aids.

If you are away in a hot climate and fancy taking a dip, it’s important to remove your hearing aids first. You can store your hearing aids safely in their case. There are now some hearing aids that are waterproof but unless you specifically have these hearing aids, they must not be worn in water.

You should remove your hearing aids before taking a dip!

Sun damage

If it is a very hot day, you will need to be mindful of leaving your hearing aids out in the sun for long periods of time. When you take your hearing aids out, be sure to pop them into your case and do not leave them on a window sill, on display in your car or on a table in the sunlight. They need to be in a cool, dry place and not in the direct sunlight.

Attend your hearing appointments

We advise that everyone has 6 monthly check-ups for their hearing aids. This is to ensure they are always in tip-top working order. The good news is that if you purchase your hearing aids with us, you get 2 or 3 years’ worth of aftercare appointments included in the price. As long as you have kept up with your appointments, your hearing aids should be in perfect working order. They will also be programmed to your current hearing loss.  If you are feeling unsure about changing your wax filter and dome, make sure you ask your hearing healthcare professional to show you again during your appointment. These should be changed at least once a month (unless you have been told otherwise).

It’s important to keep up with your 6 monthly hearing check ups.
