It\u2019s a question we get a lot; how long will my hearing aids last? It\u2019s not as cut and dry as us giving you an exact amount of time. It depends a lot on how they are used and how they are looked after. Generally after 4 or 5 years, hearing aids will have had lots of technological advancements and you\u2019ll want to look for something more sophisticated.<\/h3>\n

The better you care for your hearing aids<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, the longer they will continue to serve you. We all know that computers don\u2019t last forever, in particular small computers, such as smartphones. You need to think of your hearing aids as mini super computers \u2013 they are not going to last you forever. Do not misunderstand us though; your hearing aids are designed to withstand wear and tear. They are not incredibly delicate devices. You do not need to spend excessive amounts of time worrying about causing damage to them.<\/p>\n

Maximising the life of your current hearing aids<\/h4>\n

We advise that everyone has 6 monthly check-ups for to ensure their hearing aids are always in tip-top condition. The good news is that if you purchase your hearing aids with us, you get 2 or 3 years\u2019 worth of aftercare appointments included in the price! At your appointments, your aids will be re-programmed to your current hearing loss.\u00a0 If you are feeling unsure about changing your wax filter and dome, make sure you ask your hearing healthcare professional to show you again during your appointment. These should be changed at least once a month (unless you have been told otherwise).<\/p>\n

When you are not wearing your hearing aids, it is always best to store them in their case. It can be tempting to pop them in a pocket or bag but they are notoriously easy to lose. They could fall out of a pocket and be gone forever. Even at night, it is best to store them in your case and not just on the bedside table. This also protects them from dust and foreign bodies.<\/p>\n

So, when should you upgrade your hearing aids?<\/h4>\n

After 4 years<\/h5>\n

Technically speaking, a hearing device can last anywhere between 3 and 7 years. There are some that may last longer but this depends on the make and model as well as how well they have been maintained. Generally though, when your aids surpass their 4th<\/sup> birthday, the features will begin to decline. The reason this happens is that the technology in your aid is no longer as \u201ccutting-edge\u201d as it was when it was new. There may also be a build-up of dirt \/ grime or the hardware inside could have experienced some wear and tear.<\/p>\n

Once you get to this stage, you should start thinking of a replacement. If your device breaks then obviously you will be left without anything to use until a new one arrives and that\u2019s not a great situation to be in. If you are in any doubt at all, you can talk to your Audiologist who will be able to give you their honest opinion. They can advise you if they believe your aids could last a little longer with a good clean or whether it will be cheaper and less hassle to settle for an upgrade.<\/p>\n

Your hearing has declined<\/h5>\n

Unfortunately, some people\u2019s hearing loss will worsen over time. As your hearing loss worsens, you may need to consider a higher specification hearing aid. A good warning sign that this is the case is that the sound you are now receiving is lower. Of course, this may be due to the device but if there are no other warning sings, it\u2019s probably your hearing. Luckily for our patients, we offer 6 and 12 month check-ups to ensure your level of hearing is always monitored.<\/p>\n

Better technology is now available<\/h5>\n

As with all electrical devices, new technology will inevitably appear each year. The most important thing when deciding on an upgrade is to establish what you want out of the aid. They can be very technically complex or a little simpler depending on your needs. Your Audiologist will be the best person to discuss this with as they know your level of hearing loss. They will also be clued up on all the new releases and will be able to offer you lots of information. They\u2019ll also let you try newer models so you can experience the difference before making any decisions.<\/p>\n
