Adults are less likely to develop an infection in the middle ear due to the structure of the eustachian tubes. One of the most common ear infections that adults contract is otitis externa, also known as swimmer\u2019s ear. This is an infection of the outer ear canal.<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What causes swimmer\u2019s ear?<\/h4>\n<p>Swimmer\u2019s ear is most often caused by an excessive build-up of moisture in the ear canal, however there are a lot of different reasons for contracting it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exposure to tainted water<\/li>\n<li>Spending too much time in a warm, humid environment<\/li>\n<li>Damage to the ear canal, especially caused by improper cleaning<\/li>\n<li>Untreated <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/veritashearing.com\/uk\/ear-wax-removal\/\"><span style=\"color: blue\">earwax build up<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Foreign objects stuck in the ear<\/li>\n<li>A fungal infection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_2966\" style=\"width: 2886px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2966\" class=\"wp-image-2966 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/veritashearing.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/Endoscopic-Earwax-Removal-1.png\" alt=\"Cotton buds cause damage to your ears when used to remove ear wax. The people most at risk from contracting it could include swimmers, competitive rowers, professional divers and fisher-people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What are the symptoms of swimmer\u2019s ear?<\/h4>\n<p>Most of the time, swimmer\u2019s ear presents symptoms similar to those of a typical ear infection which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inflammation of the outer ear or ear canal<\/li>\n<li>Itchiness<\/li>\n<li>Pain in the ear<\/li>\n<li>Swollen glands<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>A \u201cfull\u201d feeling in the ear<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/veritashearing.com\/uk\/hearing-tests\/\"><span style=\"color: blue\">Hearing loss<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Discharge from the ear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>How is swimmer\u2019s ear treated?<\/h4>\n<p>Swimmer\u2019s ear often resolves on its own, however, you should always seek medical advice if you are suffering as there is the risk for more severe complications if left untreated. This includes permanent damage to your hearing and more serious infections, potentially even of the brain. Your GP will be able to identify if you need a course of antibiotics or anti-fungal ear drops by a physical examination and sometimes a swab. If you are in pain, you may also be prescribed pain and \/ or anti-inflammatory medication.<\/p>\n<p>If you do require treatment, you will be asked to keep your ear dry to avoid the risk of reinfection. You should always follow the advice of your doctor and ensure you finish the course of medication you have been prescribed. Generally, the symptoms will subside in a week or two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>How to avoid swimmer\u2019s ear<\/h4>\n<p>The best way to avoid swimmer\u2019s ear is to try and keep your ears dry. You can do this by wearing earplugs while swimming. There are specific ones you can purchase to use in the water. If you wear hearing aids, you should regularly remove them, particularly in very warm weather, to ensure that any moisture has a chance to escape. It is important to note that you should never attempt to remove moisture from your ears using a cotton bud or even your fingers. There is a chance this could actually cause an infection and not help to protect against one.
