Top reasons to call your hearing care professional

Most people can get along happily with their hearing aids and just see their hearing care professional every 6 months. However, there may be times where you do need to call and take some advice. Here are the top reasons when this may happen…

Your hearing aid is visibly broken

The top reason to call your hearing care professional is if your hearing aid needs repairing. It could be that your receiver wire (the wire that goes from your hearing aid and into your ear) has snapped and needs replacing or maybe the aid is completely dead and is producing no sound. If you have rechargeable hearing aids, it could be that one or both of them are not charging effectively, or maybe not at all. If your hearing aid is not working for any reason, the best course of action is to call your hearing care professional. They can either arrange an appointment for you, or to have the hearing aids sent back to the manufacturer for a more significant repair.

Your hearing aids are whistling

There are a few different reasons as to why your hearing aids are whistling. The first is excess earwax and this can be easily and painlessly removed by a hearing care professional.

Cotton buds cause damage to your ears when used to remove ear wax. You should always book an appointment with a professional.

Another is that your hearing aids are not fitting inside your ear correctly. This could be due to you needing a different size dome or receiver wire, or even that you are not inserting them correctly. This can be resolved with a visit to your hearing care professional.

It could be that you are turning up your hearing aids too loud and this is causing feedback, creating the whistling sound. If this is the case, you may have had a change to your hearing and your aids need reprogramming to reflect that change. Only your hearing care professional can resolve this.

Your ears are sore

Sore ears can be caused by a wealth of reasons. It could be that you have an infection which will need to be treated by a GP. Your hearing care professional will be able to confirm if this is the case by looking in your ears. It could be something as simple as your dome or receiver size needs amending to be more comfortable in your ear. In rare cases, some people have allergic reactions to their hearing aids. If you are experiencing sore ears, the best thing to do is contact your hearing care professional so they can further investigate the issue with you.

Your hearing aids are no longer making a difference to your hearing

This could be something as simple as your hearing loss has worsened. Your hearing aids will need reprogramming to the new hearing loss. Your hearing care professional can resolve this by simply retesting your hearing.

Excess earwax can also result in you not being able to hear as well. As stated above, your hearing care professional can remove this for you.

Once your hearing aids are more than 4 years old, it may be that you need to consider upgrading. There is constantly newer technology being developed for hearing aids.
