There are lots of different reasons as to why people decide to learn Sign Language. Perhaps most importantly, it’s a great communication tool to have.
What is Sign Language?
The dictionary definition is a system of communication using visual gestures and signs, as used by deaf people. It is a visual way to convey meaning without using spoken words. It is a fully-fledged natural language. In Malta, we use Maltese Sign Language (LSM). It was formally acknowledged by the Maltese Parliament in March 2016. Uniquely, LSM is a language developed within the deaf community and is not a dialect of any other Sign Language. It has its own distinct grammatical structure and lexicon.
How can I learn Sign Language?
Learning Sign Language is essentially the same as wanting to learn any other kind of language so it depends on which learning style you prefer. There are lots and lots of YouTube tutorial videos that you can search for to learn the basics. We would definitely recommend that you start by simply learning the alphabet. Check out your local college or community centre to see if they offer any classes you could join. There may even be online courses you can take. Alternatively, you could hire a private tutor to teach you. There are many hearing loss support groups across the country that can offer support or point you in the right direction of where to begin.

As with learning any new language, practice makes perfect! The best way to learn a language and keep it fresh in your mind is by practicing it and attempting to use it often.
