Choosing to invest in hearing aids is an important step towards better hearing and improved quality of life. Once you’ve placed your hearing aid order, it’s natural to wonder what happens next and when you’ll be able to start enjoying the benefits of your new devices.
Waiting for Your New Hearing Aids
The good news is that, in most cases, you won’t have to wait long. If you’ve chosen behind-the-ear (BTE) or receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aids, these are typically available very quickly. Your fitting appointment can often be arranged within a short period. If you’ve opted for custom-made hearing aids, such as in-the-ear (ITE) or completely-in-canal (CIC) models, the process takes a little longer. These devices are individually manufactured to fit the unique shape of your ear. You can usually expect them to be ready in around 14 days.

While you’re waiting for your hearing aids to arrive, your hearing care professional will ensure everything is prepared for your fitting appointment. This includes reviewing your hearing assessment results and getting your devices ready for programming.
What Happens at Your Fitting Appointment?
Your fitting appointment is one of the most important parts of your hearing journey. During this visit, your hearing care professional will programme your hearing aids specifically for your hearing loss. Using the results of your hearing assessment, they will adjust the amplification across different sound frequencies. This is to ensure you’re receiving the right level of support where you need it most.

After a hearing test, your results will be presented on a graph like this, called an Audiogram.
Modern hearing aids are highly sophisticated and can be tailored to suit your individual hearing profile. Rather than simply making everything louder, they are programmed to help you hear speech more clearly while keeping sounds comfortable and natural. Your hearing care professional may also make fine adjustments based on your feedback during the appointment, ensuring the sound quality feels right for you.
Learning to Use Your Hearing Aids
You’ll also be shown how to insert and remove your hearing aids correctly, how to change or recharge the batteries if applicable, and how to clean and care for your devices. If your hearing aids connect to your smartphone or other accessories, your hearing care professional can help you pair them. They’ll explain how to use any accompanying apps or features.

It’s important to remember that hearing aids don’t just restore hearing instantly, they also help your brain become accustomed to hearing sounds it may not have heard clearly for some time. Everyday noises such as birdsong, rustling leaves or the hum of household appliances may seem more noticeable at first. This is completely normal, and most people adapt over the first few weeks of wearing their hearing aids regularly.
Ongoing Support and Fine-Tuning
We will also arrange a follow-up appointment after your fitting. This gives you the opportunity to discuss how you’re getting on, ask any questions, and have further adjustments made if needed. Fine-tuning is a normal part of the process. It helps ensure your hearing aids continue to provide the best possible listening experience.
