We have all heard of white noise. Some of us use it to help fall asleep or even just as a relaxation device. But did you know there is also pink and brown noise? The difference in colours of noise is due to the emphasis that each sound places on different frequencies. Each of the colours, white, pink and brown all sound different to us.
White Noise
This is definitely the most recognisable. It is a constant and consistent sound that covers a large range of frequencies of sound. The actual sound that we hear from white noise is sometimes compared to the static of a TV. It is often used to mask other noises and create a calming background noise. White noise is often used to help you relax by creating a calm and soothing environment.
Pink Noise
Pink noise is very similar to white noise but the higher frequencies are not as powerful. Whereas white noise is a constant, pink noise has less power as the frequencies increase. Instead, pink noise has more power in the lower frequencies. This makes the sounds deeper and more soothing. This type of sound can be compare to the sound of rainfall.

Brown Noise
Brown noise is an even deeper sound than pink noise. It has even more power in the lower frequencies making it a richer sound with a deep rumbling quality. It could be compared to a fridge humming or even distant rumbling thunder. Brown noise is known for being able to create a very deep sense of calmness.

Which type of noise should I listen to?
There’s no right or wrong answer here. The colour that is best for you depends on your personal preference and also the reason you are listening to the music for. White noise is definitely a great starting point as it’s a very consistent sound. Pink noise is the perfect option for those who enjoy white noise but find it a little too high-pitched. Finally, brown noise is best suited for those who are looking for a deeper and richer sound. You can experiment with all three until you find you preference.
