Tinnitus treatments in the comfort of your home or work

What is tinnitus (ti-nuh-tuhs)?

Tinnitus is a ringing or buzzing sound in the ears or head that doesn’t seem to go away no matter what you do.
The sounds may vary from ringing, whistling or humming sounds. They can be low or high pitched and you may hear them in one or both ears. You may  hear the sounds more at night when trying to fall asleep.  Or it may disturb you while you’re trying to read when things are quiet around you. In some extreme cases, the sounds can be heard all the time, giving you no relief. Whatever the noises sounds like to you, getting the right help can make a difference.

How common is tinnitus?

It’s estimated around 1 in 7 adults in Europe experience a high-pitched ringing in the ears, according to a recent studyIt’s prevalence increases with age, but it can occur at any age, including in children. Men and women are affected equally.

A study by Audiologists at the University of Manchester found that 6.6 % of patients reported developing tinnitus after hospitalisation for Covid-19.

However, it’s important to remember that the sounds can be heightened during stressful periods. A global study, led by Anglia Ruskin University, found that nearly half (46%) of UK sufferers report that the noises have been made worse due to the impact of lockdown and lifestyle changes of the pandemic.

What causes the ringing or buzzing?

Tinnitus isn’t a condition or disease it’s a symptom of other conditions. It is more common in people with hearing loss, but its severity does not correlate with the extent of hearing deficit. An increased prevalence of it has also been reported in people with a history of loud noise exposure from work or leisure activities, and people with obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, or anxiety disorder [Tunkel, 2014]. [Cima, 2019BTA, 2022]
