It can be daunting going to see a Hearing Aid Audiologist for the first
time so we’re here to tell you not to worry! Audiologists aren’t just there to
check your hearing, they can offer a whole range of other services too…

What is a Hearing Aid Audiologist?

A Hearing Aid Audiologist is someone who specialises in hearing care. They can evaluate, diagnose, manage and treat hearing issues. A Hearing Aid Audiologist can do so much more than just check your hearing. They can also help you ensure your ears are healthy by diagnosing ear infections and removing excess ear wax. They can also help you manage any tinnitus symptoms. They can take impressions of your ears so that you can have customer ear plugs made.

Hearing Consultations

During a hearing consultation with a Hearing Aid Audiologist they will do a hearing test with you, called an Audiogram. They will then talk you through the results, which will be immediately available, and advise if you do have any hearing loss. You will then be shown which hearing aids would be recommended for you if you do have a loss. You will be able to try out these hearing aids and decide which the best fit is for you and for your lifestyle.

Hearing Aid Fitting Appointment

Once you have decided to go ahead with hearing aids, you will need to have an appointment to get them fitted. At this appointment, your Hearing Aid Audiologist will program the hearing aids to your exact hearing loss and show you how to put them in and take them out. You will also be shown how to change the wax filters, domes and batteries (if applicable). If your hearing aids are rechargeable, you will be shown how to charge them overnight. The Hearing Aid Audiologist will show you how to maintain them and discuss the importance of regular cleaning. Our hearing aid aftercare includes as many follow up appointments as you need to ensure you are happy with your new hearing aids.

Ear Wax Removal

Whilst ear wax is a natural substance that we actually need to help protect our inner ear from debris, some people just produce too much. An excessive build-up of wax can cause your hearing to become muffled, or even sometimes cause you pain and irritation in your ear. A Hearing Aid Audiologist can safely remove this wax for you. We always advise that you don’t ever put anything in your ears to try and remove this yourself as it will most likely make it worse and could even cause an infection.

Tinnitus Therapy

Tinnitus is defined as a constant or intermittent ringing or buzzing in your ears. Your Hearing Aid Audiologist can help you get the root cause of what is causing the tinnitus. If your tinnitus is caused by hearing loss, then it is recommended you go ahead with hearing aids and there are tinnitus programs that can be added to help mask the noise. If there is an alternative cause for your tinnitus then you can look at trying tinnitus or sound therapy.

It is recommended that people aged over 60 visit a Hearing Aid Audiologist once a year for a hearing test. We can offer this in our friendly clinics. Please get in touch if you would like to book in, or for more information on any of our other services.
