World Hearing Day 2023

The 3rd March marks World Hearing Day every year. It helps to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss. The focus is ear and hearing healthcare.

The World Hearing Day theme for 2023 is “Ear and hearing care for all!” There are events going on around the world today to raise awareness on hearing healthcare. You can check out the World Hearing Day website for any local hearing events.

Ear and hearing care for all!

This year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) want to highlight the importance of integrating ear and hearing care within primary care as an essential part of universal health coverage. Primary care is healthcare in the community, so for us in the UK, that is the NHS.

The key messages that the WHO want to promote this year are:
1. Ear and hearing problems are among the most common problems encountered in the community.
2. Over 60% of these problems could be identified and addressed at a primary level of care.
3. Integration of ear and hearing care into primary care services is possible through training. This will benefit people and help countries move towards the goal of universal health coverage.

Training

Today (3rd March 2023), the WHO will release a training manual “Primary ear and hearing care training manual for health workers and general practitioners”. This will be distributed and will help the WHO work towards their goal of ensuring people’s ear and hearing issues are identified as soon as possible.

Hearing Healthcare

Anything that raises awareness about hearing healthcare is a win in our opinion. We encourage everyone over the age of 55 to have regular hearing consultations. There has long been evidence that proves untreated hearing loss can increase the rate of cognitive decline. This means that treating a hearing loss early can reduce the risk of developing dementia by between 2 and 5 times. Dementia devastates countless families every day so being ahead of the curve really is very beneficial.

If you would like any hearing healthcare assistance, we can offer hearing consultations, tinnitus therapy, earwax removal and hearing aid servicing in the comfort of your own home. Our hearing aids come with a premium aftercare service. Please do get in touch if you would like any advice or to discuss your hearing needs a little more.
